magnum ice cream friday

I've been working on an ad campaign for Magnum ice cream over the past month or two (brand new to the U.S., FYI ;). Almost every day I look at these glamorous ice cream beauty shots that make my mouth water. I'm always nudging Emily to check out the photos every time I'm working with them because the ice cream looks so amazing. After weeks of working on this campaign, Emily and I decided that its imperative we make a Magnum ice cream purchase.

In honor of a fellow co-workers birthday today, my boss brought a bunch of boxes of Magnum ice cream to work. (Too bad Emily took the day off today!). I tried the Double Caramel flavor and it did not disappoint. I'm sure 2 hours from now I'll be passed out in a corner somewhere around the office in a sugar coma....

wedding dress of the century

It's been a week since the royal couple tied the knot and it's funny how much people are still obsessing over it. (I can admit that I'm one of them). All the secrecy over Kate's dress is what got me. How in the world was the dress kept a secret? Here's an idea. Apparently the lace-makers and seamstresses at McQueen were told that they were working on a dress for a British film. Maybe that explains why no one blabbed the details to the press...?! Well played royal wedding team, you officially dooped us all.

chalkboard masterpieces

Lately I've been obsessing over chalkboard home decor. Ever since I bought my big green armoire at the Alameda Antique Faire, I've been yearning to find some sort of framed chalkboard I could mount to the front door. It'd be perfect for writing little reminders or notes. I love that such a practical item can be easily turned into something so beautiful and decorative.

 Chalkboard Glassware, $3-14; Pier1.com

I love these chalk note jars and glassware. If you're ever throwing a party you could use these to write your name on, or label the wine (or whatever the glassware contains). Now that's smart drinking!

mothers day

I got my mothers day present locked down early this year. Unfortunately she'll be outta town this upcoming week, though when she gets back she's in for a big surprise. Happy early Mothers Day!

it's officially spring

I can't even begin to explain how long I've been waiting for winter to finally be over. 2011 marks the beginning of my fourth year living in the city, and I still cannot bear the cold winter weather here. I know I'm a wimp and I don't care. I honestly cannot fathom living in a city like Chicago or Minneapolis where people's eye balls and saliva freeze over from the wind chill 8 months out of the year. That sounds absolutely miserable to me. I'm 100% a warm-weather girl and nothing will ever change that!

On account of it being nice out (and who wants to sit on the couch indoors on a rare 85 degree day?! ahem...you know who you are), I decided to take a walk from my apartment in Noe Valley over to the Marina to check out Opening Day on the Bay. I stopped along the way to take pictures, visit the Divisadero Farmers Market and window shop. If only every day in San Francisco could look as beautiful as it did on this day. Luckily, it's only going to get better! ;)

a trip to the zoo

The gorgeous and sunny weekend weather prompted Derek and I to go on a little "field trip" to the San Francisco Zoo. It had literally been a decade if not longer since I'd been to the SF Zoo, and I was curious to see if parts of it remained recognizable to me after so many years. Obviously a lot has changed since the 80's. This field trip was yet another reminder of how old I've become (sigh)! At least the animals looked the same. And Derek was really excited about the bird exhibits...

cinco de mayo

Cinco de Mayo is approaching! I don't know about you but Mexican dishes are one of my absolute faves. Anything with a plethora of cheese, meat and salsa is my type of food. Why not join in and celebrate the festivities this year with some easy-to-make Mexican treats? These are two of my favorite simple (and original) recipes, and they each require only a few minutes to whip up!

Guacamole Trio
(makes 3 cups)

Prep:
6-8 ripe avocados, halved, core removed, scooped into large bowl
juice of 2 limes
1 large handful of cilantro, chopped
salt and pepper to taste
green Tabasco sauce to taste
1/4 cup chopped pineapple, mango, or strawberries
3 slices of good quality bacon cooked, cooled, and broken into small pieces

Mash avocados in bowl and add the lime juice, cilantro, salt, pepper, and Tabasco. Mix to combine.

Divide the guacamole into thirds and separate into serving bowls. In one bowl add the fruit, mix to combine and top with some additional fruit to garnish. In another bowl add the bacon, mix to combine and top with a few bacon pieces to garnish. Add a bit of cilantro to garnish the plain guacamole. Serve with tortilla chips.

Prickly Pear Margaritas

Prep:
3 ounces tequila blanco
1/2-ounce Cointreau
1 1/2 ounces lime juice
2 ounces prickly pear syrup
Kosher salt and turbinado sugar, for garnishing the glass
Kumquats and lime peels, for garnish

Combine the tequila, Cointreau, lime juice and pear syrup in a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously to incorporate. Wet the rim of a margarita glass and dip into salt and sugar mixture. Pour margarita into glass over ice. Garnish with a kumquat and a curled piece of lime peel.
